THE ROLE OF ETHICS AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

Abstract
With the rapid evolution of technology, issues such as data privacy, digital literacy gaps, information overload, ethical concerns, changing user expectations, and technological obsolescence have increasingly impacted the practices of information professionals, creating a need for a comprehensive examination of current challenges and best practices.The study addressed critical ethical and social responsibility issues in information science, focusing on data privacy, intellectual property rights, misinformation, and the digital divide. The primary objective was to assess these challenges and propose actionable recommendations for improving ethical and socially responsible practices in information science. A qualitative research methodology was employed, utilizing an extensive review of recent literature, including scholarly articles and industry reports, to gather data on the subject. Data collection involved analyzing relevant publications to understand current trends and issues. The data was analyzed through thematic coding, which facilitated the identification of recurring ethical concerns and social responsibilities within the field. The study found that while progress had been made in areas such as data privacy and intellectual property management, significant challenges persisted, particularly regarding misinformation and equitable access to technology. The recommendations included developing and adhering to updated ethical guidelines, enhancing media literacy programs,and implementing transparency measures in data management. The study concluded that continuous adaptation of ethical standards and social responsibility initiatives is essential to address emerging challenges effectively in information science.
