Abstract
The significance of security cannot be overstated, as it is required for human stability and peaceful coexistence. Security entails the protection of nations, community, as well as individual against dangerous attacks. The disturbing security issues in Nigeria such as the terror activities of Boko Haram, banditry, militancy and kidnappings have given many Nigerians sleepless nights. The study unpack the eventually contested concept of security, exploring in deep philosophical base for a better understanding of the concept by theorist involved in its interrogation, relying on analytic an relatively interrogative methods of social inquiry. The method of content analysis was equally adopted, the study extracted data from secondary sources such as journals, text and internet sources. The study has two interrelated objectives. First, it attempts to raise philosophically fundamental questions that border on the metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, and logic of security which frame the underpinnings of the concept. Second, the study attempts to connect those philosophically fundamental questions to the praxis, practically showing how either security deficit or gain could be promoted, depending on the answers supplied to the philosophically fundamental questions in contemporary Nigerian society. Drawing on latter, the problem statement of the study is that there is substantial security deficit in contemporary Nigerian society have not been seriously considered and conscientiously addressed. The study therefore reveals that it is the failure of the government to attend to fundamental issues that hassled to the aforementioned issues. Furthermore, the study says it is when the issues framed in the questions are addressed squarely that one would know what security today is and the best practices for its promotion. It recommends the application of philosophy as an essential tool in resolving security issues in Nigeria.
